Leadership Team

Larry Schmitt, Ph.D
President
Larry has been working with innovative companies to create competitive advantage and market leadership for more than 35 years. His career-long involvement and interest in identifying the new opportunities that arise from emerging customer needs and new capabilities has been the foundation of Inovo.
Larry is a frequent speaker on Innovation, presenting and participating in panel discussions at national and international events. He also serves as a guest lecturer at the University of Michigan's Medical Innovation Center, College of Engineering, and Ross School of Business.
Earlier in his career, Larry held both technical and managerial positions with multinational corporations including General Electric and Unisys, He subsequently served as an executive at two successful tech startups. The first, Applied Intelligent Systems Inc., was acquired by Electro-Scientific Industries (ESI) in 1998. The second, Intelligent Reasoning Systems Inc., was acquired by Photon Dynamics in 2001.
Soon thereafter, Larry and his former ESI colleague Steve Schwartz founded Inovo to further develop and apply Larry’s theories of innovation.
Larry holds a BS in Computer Science from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and an MS and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Brian Christian
Partner
Brian has 29 years' worth of diverse business experience in product development, marketing, sourcing and information technology across multiple industries and geographies. The common theme throughout his career has been the development of new technologies, new products and new capabilities.
Prior to joining Inovo, Brian was founder and president of DASO, a consulting firm with a mission to help companies build innovation, product development, and sourcing strategies and capabilities. Previously, Brian worked for Whirlpool Corporation in multiple management positions, most recently as Vice President of global product development. Earlier in his career, he built his management consulting skills while working at Booz & Company's Chicago office.
Brian holds a Chemical Engineering degree from the University of Michigan and an MBA from the University of Chicago.

Steve Schwartz
Partner
Steve has over 25 years of experience with technology innovation and commercialization. He has worked at companies ranging from start-ups to multinational organizations. Prior to co-founding Inovo, Steve held management, engineering and research positions at Motorola, Electro Scientific Industries, NASA (in Moffett Field, California), and Synthetic Vision Systems (now part of GSI Lumonics).
In 1998 he co-founded Cognitive Bionics, Inc. with the mission to extend the reach of researchers and scientists through novel applications of computing technology. In 2001, he partnered with his former ESI colleague Larry Schmitt to found Inovo.
Steve holds a BSE in Computer Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; an MS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; and an MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.

Joshua Botkin
Partner
Josh is committed to helping develop new-to-the-world products, services, and business models that create economic and social value.
Since joining Inovo in 2005, he has led innovation initiatives for clients such as Corning, Dow, Ford, Henkel, Johnson Controls, and Nestle Purina -- including projects in the areas of advanced materials, alternative energy, alternative transportation, health & wellness, personal electronics, and smart coatings, among others.
Josh also teaches innovation to MDs, MBAs, and Engineering PhDs at the University of Michigan's Medical Innovation Center, and he has served as an invited guest lecturer at Michigan's College of Engineering and Ross School of Business, as well as the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
As an entrepreneur, Josh has worked with researchers from the University of Michigan to launch and manage two start-up ventures (involving space physics and orthopedic health). Earlier in his career, Josh worked as a print journalist, helped produce a series of PBS documentaries hosted by Walter Cronkite, and served as a Fortune 500 marketing manager.
Josh received a BA from Columbia University and an MBA from the University of Michigan.
